Out for the count in an exposed and precarious position limb has long been standard english for a main branch of a tree, though it is little used in that sense. American english has retained the use of the word, however, and has recently (about 1945, perhaps from infiltration by american servicemen's vocabulary) exported the idea of someone being out on a limb, i.E. At the end of a branch, unable to go any further or at risk of having his position collapse under him.


And here's another fact!
